One of the biggest lessons that you will learn when attending a school for hypnosis and NLP is the fact that in order to assist your patients, you need to be able to build a strong, lasting rapport with them. This rapport can be either conscious or subconscious depending on the therapist's preferences. The question is, though, how does one actually go about developing this close bond of trust and understanding. The key is mirroring and matching.
It goes without saying that people generally feel more at ease when they are in a familiar situation or when they are with someone with whom they feel a sense of familiarity toward. With the mirroring and matching technique for NLP that you will learn at a school for hypnosis, you will be able to create this familiarity without the patient even being aware of it. In doing so, you will have the chance to put their minds at rest and allow them to feel relaxed enough to open themselves up to the power of hypnosis and NLP. Here are a few tips to follow with regard to mirroring and matching when it comes to building relationships with your patients:
- Emulate the way that the patient is sitting: This includes posture, how far back he or she is sitting on a chair, what he or she is doing with his or her hands. By mirroring the patient in this way, subconsciously, he or she will start to feel closer to you and will instantly feel more trusting. Body language is everything and by emulating someone's natural body language, you will automatically begin to feel at one with that person - which is great for both patient and therapist, allowing them both to achieve the desired goals within that specific session.
- Emulate the patient's breathing: This is an immensely powerful tool that will allow you to gain access to someone else's trust without them even knowing it. Breath in itself has always been recognised for its power. Breathing is, for example, the key to mastering the art of medication - which is a completely relaxed state where all emotions are let go of and the person becomes entirely at peace. By emulating a patient's breathing, a deep connection will be formed and a safer environment created.
